Roughly three weeks ago: I make an appointment for Ben with Dr. Bornstien, the GI specialist. The soonest available appointment is in February, but they put Ben on a list to be called if there are any cancellations before then. I stick in the back of my head that I may be getting a call at any time from Dr. Bornstien's office to reschedule the appointment to be sooner.

Roughly two weeks ago: I get a call from a doctor's office, saying there has been a cancellation and would I be available for an appointment on Friday, December 22nd at 2:30. Sure! That would be perfect, since Ben is out of school at that point. Yay!

Yesterday: I get a call confirming today's appointment.

Today: I arrive at Dr. Bornstien's office about twenty minutes early, and before Sara and Ben have arrived. I go inside to check in, and am met with some confusion. They don't show Ben as having an appointment today, and in fact Dr. Bornstien is out on vacation all of this week. I explain that I received a call saying there had been a cancellation, and even got a call yesterday confirming the appointment. We go around and around, but it becomes very clear that *I* am the one who is confused. So I say to myself, I *know* that either Ben or I has an appointment *somewhere* in about fifteen minutes.... where in the hell is it?

I pulled out my phone and looked back to the call log, finding the call yesterday confirming the appointment. I dial that number, and am greeted with a chipper "Dr. Boyd's office!" Now I'm thinking to myself, "Who in the heck is Dr. Boyd?!?"

Well, it turns out that Dr. Boyd is the opthalmologist that I made and appointment with to get an eye exam and maybe some new glasses, since it has been four years since my last exam. At that point I pieced together what happened. I was expecting a call from Dr. Bornstien's office. When I got a call from Dr. Boyd's office, my brain was expecting and waiting for a call about a cancellation so what I heard was Dr. Bornstien instead of Dr. Boyd. They were phonetically close enough for it to pass right through that mental filter, especially since both the rescheduling and confirmation calls came while I was in the middle of work and concentrating on some coding problem.

So yeah, instead of going to the doctor today we went to the Magic Kingdom instead. How's that for a sweet deal? Sara laughed when I explained what happened. It was no big deal, since she wasn't working anyway. We all went to the Magic Kingdom, Ben went on Snow White, Peter Pan, Mickey's Philharmagic, and Pooh. A grand time was had by all.

I can be a real goober sometimes.

Oh... momma....

Over at deviantART, here is an artists rendition of the fictional "200X Phantasm Cuda". If this car actually existed, I would buy it in a heartbeat. You hear me Mopar? I'm lookin' at you....
