Last September there was a catastrophic failure on Big Thunder Mountain Railroad at Disneyland that caused the death of one rider and inured at least ten others. The crash was entirely the fault of Disney, both due to exceedingly poor maintenance that allowed two bolts from a guide-wheel assembley to fall off leading to a derailment, and also due to inattentive ride operators who knew the train was making unusual noises but elected to send it around one more time with passengers before taking it out of service. The ride stayed closed until this past March.
A month later, two unoccupied trains collided during a reset operation. In a nutshell, one train was at a complete stop, and another train was allowed to come down a hill and pass through a braking station and onward into the stationary train. The computer that monitors the train locations should never have allowed this.
Last night, three more riders were injured when two trains collided at a relatively low speed coming into the station. Once again the computer system that controlls the train movements should never have allowed the second train to come anywhere near the first one.
How much longer before Disney has to shut down Big Thunder and completely rebuild it like they are currently doing with Space Mountain?
