There are very few things in this world that are as satisfying as the look in my son's eyes when he turns to me for comfort and support. Whatever I may be to anyone else in the world, to Ben I am Hero, Protector, Dad. He may not have the vocabulary to express it, but it is all right there in his eyes.
Today Ben went to the dentist for the first time in five years. We were afraid that it would be a very difficult visit, letting some stranger poke around in his mouth. As it turns out it went pretty smoothly. He wanted me sitting right next to him, holding his hands and talking in his ear, but as long as I was there he wasn't afraid. Nervous, yes, but as long as dad was there he knew he was safe.
The checkup went well, but not surprisingly he has some dental work that needs attention. It's too much to expect him to sit still while drills and things are going on, so that means a trip to the hospital with full sedation. The positive thing is that he won't associate that experience with the trip to the dentist's office, so I think future trips to the dentist will go well. With any luck we will be able to keep future dental work to a minimum.
In other news, my bug count at work continues to remain comfortably low. Lots of little detail fixes, no major blowups. The final code freeze is EOD Monday, followed by four days of any final hot fixes. After that, it's on to the next version. Theoretically for version two we will have actual functional requirements created by product managers and approved by stakeholders. :-0
Another positive thing at work is that they called
retcon for an interview for the IT position. He did a phone interview today, and should be coming in for a face-to-face sometime next week. This job is perfect for him, and he would finally be paid much closer to what he is worth. Damn it, he deserves it.
