What an odd mishmash of a day.

I had trouble sleeping last night, for no apparent reason, so not surprisingly 6am came particularly early. I peeled myself out of bed, went over to Sara's place to put Ben on the bus, and then came back home and dozed for a while. I am 100% blocked at work right now, so there was pretty much nothing to do all day except hang around and watch for any email or instant messages. I think I watched either three or four episodes of Angel over the course of the day. And got paid to do it.

In the evening I went over to the Magic Kingdom, for a couple of reasons. I wanted to go on the Alien Encounter one last time, since Saturday will be it's last day of operation. I have mixed feelings about that - I really like the ride, but it is totally not appropriate for where it is. Although it fits the science fiction theme of Tomorrowland I think it would have been better suited as an attraction at Disney/MGM. In any case, starting Sunday the space currently occupied by Alien Encounter will begin construction of Stitch Escape!, which should be open mid- to late-2004.

I also went to see the first public showing of Wishes, the new fireworks show. I had seen Fantasy in the Sky a number of times, and it was a nice enough fireworks show but nothing earth-shattering. Wishes... is. I was absolutely awestruck by it. They have added multiple new launching points, as well as some very original lighting effects. At one point the music drifts into The Sorcerer's Apprentice and Cinderella's Castle is transformed into the sorcerer's hat. It was just an amazing effect. There were a number of other stunning effects as well. It was definitely worth going in to see it.

While I was waiting for the fireworks show to start I also got to see Disney security in action. Up on the loading deck for the Main Street train station, some guy sucker punched another guest completely without provocation. It was very strange, not the sort of thing you expect to see at Disney World. The assailant ran down the stairs and into the crowd as the victim just kind of stood there stunned with his lip split open. Then magically, an army of security guards just appeared out of thin air. There is no other way I can describe it; one moment it was just the normal crowd, and the next there were easily a dozen security guards plus several other cast members that just kind of appeared out of the woodwork.

In short order the assailent was brought back to the train station for the victim to identify, and then he was escorted backstage by security. One assumes he is at this moment having a particularly unpleasant evening. Then once the assailent was taken away and the injured guest was attended to, all of the security guards just kind of vanished into the background. Within the space of five minutes the whole thing was taken care of and disappeared.

Meanwhile, apparently over on the walkway to Adventureland by the Crystal Palace a woman went into labor. Security tried to get her out of the park and into medical care, but apparently it progressed too quickly for her to be moved. She gave birth right there on the spot, promptly followed by the fireworks. It wouldn't surprise me if the child is named either Mickey or Minnie...
