"Top Thrill Dragster, Cedar Point’s new, $25 million roller coaster, could be closed in midseason if the ride’s manufacturer can’t get it back in service and operating on a consistent basis, a park spokesman said yesterday.
Janice Witherow said the ride has been under repair much of the season, which opened May 4, frustrating visitors eager to experience a ride billed as the tallest and fastest coaster in the world.
...
"It’s been down more than it’s been up," Ms. Witherow conceded. "It’s certainly been frustrating for all of us here at Cedar Point."
Top Thrill Dragster has been out of service since June 20.
...
"If we do not meet the goal and we feel it can’t operate consistently, then we are looking at many scenarios" which would include closing the ride or rebuilding it, she said. "We’re not at the point of having an in-depth discussion on that yet."
The manufacturer, Intamin AG of Switzerland, has had "a handful" of technicians at the park trying to solve the problems, most of which stem from the hydraulics used to shoot the cars up the track.
At times, some trains stopped short of cresting the hill and came back down under controlled safety devices. In May, a cable snapped that shut down the ride.
Hydraulics specialists are working with Intamin to solve the problem, part of which involves contaminated oil.

What can I say? Crap. Crap crap crap. Ah well, there are still 15 other coasters in the park. I'm sure we'll still have fun while we are there, but even if Top Thrill Dragster is up and running again I'm not sure how safe it will be. I mean, there hasn't been a catastrophic failure yet, but I don't really want to be the tragic headline story featured nationwide.
