Just got back from seeing "Wrong Turn" tonight with Kris. This movie is an old school "hills have eyes" style straightforward stalker flick. No excuses, no clever reveals, no "Scream" style self-referential humor, just a bunch of young adults being chased throught the woods by a family of inbred lunatics.
I loved it.
It does what 'House of 1000 Corpses" completely failed to do, which is to create a plausible world for these characters to inhabit. Three inbred maniacs living deep in the West Virginia backwoods? Sure. I can buy that just as easily as the inevitable "Deliverance" references. The gore is used very effectively without being splashy or overdone, and the sound effects are particularly disturbing. There is even a pretty dang original tree-top chase sequence, sort of a "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Jason" kind of thing. If you are into this kind of thing, go see it quickly since it will almost certainly be disappearing from theaters shortly. Is it scary? Nah, not really. But it is a fun and twisted ride.
