This is my last catch-up post. Woo hoo!
Yesterday I spent an absolutely marvelous day with Kris. I picked her up at about ten in the morning, and we took the Edmonds-Kingston ferry to head over to Suquamish to visit our friend Trisha. Let me tell you, Trish is an amazing woman. She has been battling cancer for going on four years now, and has faced her mortality with a remarkable degree of grace and humor. The disease continues to strike blows at her, and she continues to fight it with everything she's got. I first met her that morning in the fall of '98, out on the sidewalk in front of the KOMO radio studios celebrating the return of Pat Cashman to the airwaves. Somewhere along the way we became friends, and my live has been enriched because of it.
So anyway, yesterday was Kris' birthday and she wanted to spend it hanging out with the people she loves to be with. We spend the afternoon hanging out with Trish, her husband, and her two teenage children. It was a very comfortable and pleasant afternoon. They invited us to join them for dinner, to which we readily agreed. For the late afternoon we headed over to Port Townsend. We got some lunch at a 50's style soda shop, where I had a magnificent and authentic chocalate malt. We also meandered the main strip looking at shops until they rolled up the sidewalks. Then we headed back to Trisha's place. The whole trip was more about the traveling than the destination, and I must say it was just very nice to be driving on country roads listening to music and savoring the comfortable closeness of being with Kris.
Dinner was just fine, and a birthday cake was also brought out to celebrate Kris' birthday. Mostly it was just a pleasant evening of dinner and conversation with vey nice people. Finally we made our way back to Kingston in time to catch the 11:10 ferry, I dropped Kris off at her home before midnight, and twenty minutes after that I settled into my own bed and drifted off to sleep. All in all it was a wonderful day. Life is good.
