I saw the original Japanese version of "Ring" last night, and I am absolutely astounded to say that I actually liked the American remake better. Heresy? Well, not quite. The two movies are largely beat-for-beat the same, except for a few very significant changes. Those changes were not so much diversions from the original as they were an effort to take things that resonate very strongly in a Japanese cultural background and replace them with things an American audience could relate to. The simple fact is that while I intellectually understood what was happening with the motivations in the original, the American version resonated with me more. That being said, it was still a spectacularly good movie that I highly recommend.
