I had to be up at 5am this morning, in order to get to Sara's place in time for her to leave for work (she had to go in much earlier than usual). I arrived at her place, stumbled in half awake, and she left for work. Since I had over an hour and a half before Ben needed to be up, I decided to crawl into bed with him and get a little more sleep.
I awoke about an hour later, glanced at the clock, and decided I may as well get up and get his lunch ready. Stumbling out of bed I didn't bother to turn any lights on, so as not to wake Ben up early. I staggered into the bathroom, gazing at myself in the mirror. I was still in that kind of not-quite-awake fugue state, and in the dim light my reflection showed an unshaven face with unkempt hair and eyes like big black saucers, with barely any whites showing. I rubbed my eyes, shook my head, and turned to walk into the living room. And that's when I saw her.
Standing very still in the shadowy living room was a Sadako/Samara figure, her long hair covering most of her face obscuring all but a single baleful eye staring at me. I screamed, and quite literally fell down in terror as I stumbled backwards from the sight. Sara laughed, apologized, and explained that she had been sent home early and when she got home and saw I was sleeping she decided that there wasn't any reason to wake me up.
I gotta tell ya, I felt mighty sheepish sitting there on the floor. The Big Strong Fearless Protector, almost wetting himself and paralyzed with fear over a few shadows. Not exactly a real ego booster.
So I shook my head again to rattle loose the remaining cobwebs, and began to push myself back up onto my feet when I was suddenly hit by another ice-cold bolt of terror. When Sara leaves for work, I follow her to the door and then lock it behind her. I turn the dead bolt, and then set the chain lock so that Ben can't sneak out while I am not looking. Particularly since his little adventure a few weeks ago I am pathological about setting the chain lock. Which means that there was no way Sara could have let herself back into the apartment without waking me up. I looked up at the living room again, and Sadako/Samara took a shuddering half-step towards me as I...
...sat bolt upright in bed, dripping in sweat.
Ben was still sound asleep beside me, and glancing at the clock I still had another twenty minutes before I had to get him up and ready for school. Needless to say, I didn't go back to sleep.
