Ok, for those who don't know - mom has been sick for the past several months. It started out seeming like a simple flu kind of thing, but didn't get better over time. She went to the doctor, doctor prescribed some pills, the pills didn't help. After two months the doctor had her get an ultrasound, which led to a CT scan, which showed nothing. Then during a trip to the ER she got another CT scan which showed nothing. Then a HIDA scan, which was specifically supposed to look at the gall bladder because it had not been imaged in any of the previous tests. HIDA scan showed nothing. A second ultrasound still showed nothing and was not able to image the gall bladder. Finally last Wednesday I took her back to the ER again because she was in so much pain. She got the same ER doc who had seen her the previous week, and he decided to admit her to the hospital on the theory that it would push the doctors to get something done.
On Saturday morning she had laparoscopic surgery to look at and possibly remove her gallbladder. If all went well, the procedure should have taken 15 - 20 minutes. In actuality it took nearly 90 minutes. The gall bladder had shrunken, hardened, and attached itself to the side of her stomach. The doctor suspects that what happened is she got a stone, and eventually the stone passed through the wall of her gall bladder, through her stomach wall, and then passed without her even knowing it. The surgery went very well, and he was able to completely remove the gall bladder without damaging the stomach. He placed a drain in the abdominal cavity to watch the fluids there, and they are monitoring her closely to make sure she doesn't have a hole in her stomach. She is still in a fair amount of pain from the surgery, but she is slowly getting better. I am sure she will be in the hospital for several more days, and she will be sore for probably a month or more, but eventually she will feel better than she has in months.
So anyway, I've been kind of distracted by that for the last several days, mostly worrying about her and such. But she is going to be fine, so that's good.
