Amazing how time flies. It was exactly one year ago that Ben finally left the hospital. He was so pitifully small and weak, pale and gaunt. He had gained a little bit of weight because of the IV nutrients he had been getting for the past five weeks, but his ribs and his spine stood out plainly. What a difference a year makes. He has now almost doubled in weight, and he is getting downright pudgy. He craves physical exercise, most especially swimming.
Yesterday he went to a water park for the very first time, and although he complained every step of the way from the drive to parking to getting through the turnstiles, as soon as he got inside and saw the wave pool he was in heaven. He wasn't just standing in the shallow end letting the waves splash around him, he was aggressively swimming to the deepest part of the wave pool where the water was well over his head and was throwing himself into the oncoming waves with wild abandon. When he tired of that (after an hour), he tried some of the water slides and loved them just as much. All told he spent more than three hours there, and the next day he was begging to go back. He spent another three hours there today, getting plenty of good exercise.
I gotta say, this summer has been much nicer than the last one....
