This past week I took vacation from work, but didn't actually go anywhere. As posted previously, I spent most of of last weekend working with Kris to re-do Ben's play room. Since then, however, I have been working on a project that I had planned over a year ago. I built and installed more than six linear feet of floor-to-ceiling paperback bookshelves. The unit is along the same wall that the door opens onto, and is comprised of three two-foot-wide sections, each of which can accommodate up to nine shelves. (Or at least, I built nine shelves per section. I suppose it could hold more, but that seems like plenty). Also, I popped out a power outlet that was originally in the wall now covered by the bookcase, and ran it through the base of the bookcase. It is now positioned very conveniently next to where Kris' desk sits, giving her an extra outlet. I have to say, I am damn happy with how this turned out. A picture is included below, after the break for anyone who is interested in seeing it.

The shelves are still being painted, and the first batch should be ready to set in place later tonight. The new power outlet is not visible in the picture, it is in the base around the right side of the bookcase.

My project for next weekend is to finally install the smaller built in desktop that will go in the corner next to the new bookcase. I also have plans for a longer, eight foot, built in desktop on the facing wall, plus roughly ten linear feet of full depth bookshelves that wrap around one corner of the room. Add in a few floating shelves and some artwork, plus some floor molding, and the office will be done. Hopefully by the end of the year.
