Again last week, didn't get much training in. One morning skate, but both Thursday and Friday mornings were impossible to skate due to a dentist appoointment on one morning and an eye exam on the next. I also didn't get to skate Thursday night due to rain. The rain persisted throughout the weekend, making any weekend skates impossible. Finally this morning it was clear enough, and I got to put in ten miles. I was definitely feeling the last three miles of it, so I have a ways to go to build my endurance back up. The weather forecast looks passable for this week, so I should be able to get out more often. That is what is really holding me back at this point, only skating 1-2 times per week instead of the 4-5 times I should be. Tomorrow I am going to skate east instead of west and add a couple more miles to the skate. I intend to have completed a half marathon skate in one go before the end of the week, and then draw it out from there. On days where the weather interferes, I will have to go to the gym and do weight training instead (which I really should be doing anyway).
Course: West Orange Trail, mile marker 5 to mile marker 0 and back
Distance: 10 miles
Overall Time: 00:59:42
Fastest Mile: 00:05:09
Average Mile*: 00:05:36
The minimum pacing requirements for the full marathon is 7 minutes per mile, so on paper I have that down. Of course, it's easy to beat that pace for the first half of the race. I was doing fine last year until around mile twenty, and then I completely lost it. Then again, during the months leading up to the race I had not done any serious training. In fact, I pretty much stopped skating regularly once we started the process of buying the house. Up until October of '05 I was on track with completing a full marathon with plenty of time to spare. Funny how when you stop skating for five or six months, you kind of lose your endurance. Go figure. This year will be different.
*Note: Average Mile calculated without first or last mile, since the mile from marker 4 through marker 5 includes one lighted crosswalk, another major 4-way traffic stop, plus a half dozen road crossings through downtown Winter Garden, causing the first and last mile of the skate to have an extra 2-3 minutes each way from stopping.
