There is a common scene in movies, where the warrior is preparing to do battle. It might be a knight putting on his armor for a joust, a police officer preparing for a siege, or even an astronaut strapping into the command module preparing for launch. There is the snap-click as pieces are linked together, and the hiss of straps being tightened. It is a ritualistic procession of movements, as much about mental preparation as it is about physical protection.

That's exactly what I felt this evening, putting on my body protection while preparing to go skating. As I cinched down the last strap on my gauntlet (ok., wrist pad), it was all I could do to not hold up my hand in my best imitation of Bruce Campbell and say, "groovy!"

So the skating went much better today. I was please to find that I felt much more stable on my feet. I was still definitely overcompensating from time to time, but there was never a point where I felt out of control. I spent a fair amount of time just drilling on stopping with my heel brake. It's an odd body movement to make, sticking your foot out in front of you and kind of sitting down on it. It doesn't make any sense when I describe it that way, but that's the way it feels to me. I still need to practice my stops a bit more before I feel totally comfortable with them, but all in all I feel ready to go skating with Ben this weekend. Of course, he'll skate circles around me but that's all right.
