So, yesterday was a bit of a long day.
First thing in the morning, as soon as doctor's offices started opening, I was on the phone trying to find a pediatric orthapedic surgeon who could cast Ben's arm. That actually only took about a half hour to arrange, and Ben had an appointment at 2:15 at an office over by the Orlando Regional Medical Center. I let Sara know about the appointment, then moved on to the next item on my checklist.
One of my team members lost her mother very suddenly last week, and yesterday was this team member's first day back at work. I got on the phone with her, and spent over an hour bringing her up to speed on everything that had happened at work during her absence and set the plans for this week. She seems to be doing very well, all thngs considered. Still grieving, obviously, but now at the point where she really needs the distraction of work to help take her mind off of family for a while. My heart goes out to her for her loss.
Once that was taken care of, then it was time for me to tie up some other loose ends at work and then head over to Sara's place to watch Ben while Sara took a shower and got ready to go. With the splint, Ben was peeling it off any chance he got, so he really couldn't be left alone. The fracture is fairly small, but we didn't want him to make it any worse. Once Sara was all set, we headed on over to the clinic. We arrived early enough so that I was able to do all the new patient paperwork completed prior to the scheduled appointment time. Unfortunately, the doctor was running late so we wound up spending over an hour and a half in the waiting room. Ben did pretty well with the wait, and even took a nap for a while.
Finally we were called back into the treatment room, and that's when Ben freaked. It was a full on panic attack with yelling, hitting and kicking. It took about five minutes to calm him down, and I was finally able to distract him with several rounds of "head, shoulders, knees and toes". Ben was taken to another room to have two more x-rays taken, which he was very good for. It only took a few minutes for those to be developed, and for the doctor to review them. The process of actually putting on the cast only took about ten minutes, and Ben was pretty good with it. The cast only needs to stay on for four weeks, and comes off on my birthday. We scheduled the appointment, and then got out of there.
Now, when we first arrived at the clinic the only parking option was to valet park. No big deal, I'm good with that. Unfortunately, the valet apparently negelected to put on my parking brake when he parked it, and my car rolled back. I was left with a smashed in rear bumper. So this meant that we had to go over to another location to meet with the supervisor, who filled out a bunch of paperwork and took my information. Theoretically I should get a call from their claims department today. I expect to be told that they will pay for the bumper to be completely replaced and will also pay for a rental car while mine is in the body shop. That's the only acceptable solution that I can see.
With that paperwork taken care of, we took Ben to the mall to see Santa and to have him sign Ben's cast. Ben has been visiting Santa regularly this year, and they are on a first name basis. Ben was very happy to see Santa, and was very happy and bouncy the entire time. Once the cast was set, Ben had become visibly more comfortable and happy. He had a great evening at the mall, and then I took he and Sara home. I just heard from Sara that he slept for a solid twelve hours last night, so I guess it's safe to say that the cast is working. Hopefully now he will be able to have a much more normal Christmas break.
