I knew I needed new tires, at least one pair. My driver's side rear tire has had a slow leak in it for months, and as a side effect the outside tread on it has worn terribly. I knew that I would need to replace it (and therefore its mate as well), so I stopped into a tire store to have them checked. My hope was that I could wait a month or two, but going into fall I didn't want to take any unnecessary risks. As it turns out, that tire was in far worse shape than I realized, worn down into the secondary rubber. Also, the front wheel on that side had also worn dramatically -- probably due to the uneven pull from the damaged wheel it was dragging behind it. Even worse, there was a major crack on the front tire. It wasn't torn quite down to the bands, but it was close enough to be worrisome. Needless to say I elected not to wait a month or two, so now I have a set of four brand new tires. I could feel the difference on the road right away, and I am curious to see if my mileage will improve as well (in recent months I have been getting about two fewer miles to the gallon than usual).
