I just got home from visiting Ben up at Shands.
The good news: his amylase and lipase (eventually I am going to look up the spelling for those) are lower than they have ever been since he first entered the hospital four weeks ago. Both are nearly at normal levels, and his liver numbers are pretty much normal as well. He had the abdominal CT scan and seemed to do well with it, but there were no results available tonight. This is definitely a case of "no news is good news", because if there were something obviously wrong we would have heard about it right away. If things looked largely normal, the report would wait until tomorrow morning to find its way back to us.
The bad news: he is still running a fever and is still displaying pain behaviors like folding forward over a pillow. If all of his numbers have come down to normal, there is no obvious reason for him to be running a fever or still be in pain. Hopefully there will be more news tomorrow morning.
Beyond that, Sara and I were able to talk a little bit during a brief period in which we were alone with Ben in the room. She was trying to be very diplomatic, recognizing that I had "left the hospital wounded" in her own words. Then she tried to justify her position and explain how totally reasonable it was. When I respectfully disagreed, she immediately got her back up. When I pointed out that her own mother had directly accused me of child abuse, she responded that as she understood it I took an attitude with her mother and so she had responded in kind. We were interrupted before I could point out that "you are speaking too loudly and keeping him awake" is not equivalent to "you deliberately inflicted pain and suffering upon your child". But there you have it.
What I actually read a little bit of in Sara was that she was afraid I would respond to recent events by just walking away and leaving her alone to deal with Ben. As if.
