So, we had a major setback today. Ben's pancreatic enzymes shot up today (this is a Bad Thing), completely derailing any notion of him being released from the hospital this week. The working consensus is that this was caused by Ben eating french fries last night, the grease and fat from which irritated his pancreas. In our defense, we had avoided giving him any french fries but one of his doctors said it would be ok, since he thought it was more important for Ben to eat *something*. We'll know for sure when tomorrow's blood tests come in; if the pancreatic enzymes drop again, then it was almost certainly the fries. Poor guy, it looks like he pretty much just lost his favorite food in the world (and he just doesn't have that many food items he eats to begin with). There was talk early on in the day that we would have to make a decision about having a feeding tube inserted, said decision needing to be made by tomorrow. This caused much wailing and gnashing of teeth on the part of Sara and myself. Later in the day, we arrived at a less distressing conclusion. The doctor thinks that if the numbers go down again tomorrow and show a steady downward trend for the next couple of days, then he would like to see Ben discharged from the hospital but continue the IV nutrients from home. He thinks that although Ben is malnourished, he is nowhere near the life threatening level that would require a feeding tube. If we can get Ben able to attend school, and set the number one priority at school for expanding his food palate, then we have a fighting chance at avoiding the g-tube. That's a lot of "if's", but I'll take what I can get.
I made the decision this afternoon to take the remainder of the week off from work. Frankly, I have not been able to focus on work anyway, and the quality of my work has been questionable at best. Better to simply stay away and allow the team to plan around it, rather than string them along and potentially cause real damage.
Ben has been fairly quiet all evening, and I expect he will be asleep before too terribly much longer. I will be asleep shortly after that.
