I can't keep writing things over and over again, I gotta get some sleep.  Here's the email I sent my co-workers today:

Ben had a PICC line inserted today, which is the next step up from an IV line.  It is basically a catheter that goes in through a vein in the arm and runs all the way up to the heart.  It can be left in place for several weeks, compared to an IV that goes bad after a few days (which is what happened last night).  Blood draws can be taken from the PICC line, so he won’t need to be poked anymore.

He is still not allowed any food or drink by mouth (and even a tiny sip of juice makes him immediately throw up anyway).  He was started on pain medication yesterday evening, which seemed to help, and he is now getting nutrients and lipids in his PICC line.  His liver function is also impaired, and his blood clotting factor is significantly out of whack.  That last one scares me, since my mom has a rare blood clotting disorder and it may be a genetic thing.

There were no blood tests run today because of the whole thing with getting the PICC inserted, so we won’t know until tomorrow afternoon how things are going.  It is pretty certain that he is going to need to be in the hospital for a while yet.
