Well, as of this afternoon we have finally gone live with the piece I have been working on for the past few months. We opened to staff only last week, and now it is open to the entire membership. I fixed several small annoyances today plus corrected one major error in logic. (It's worth noting that said error did not actually break anything nor impact functionality in any way, it was just saving some extended data in table A instead of table B, which would have caused a problem.... eventually.) I have another new feature to add tomorrow morning (one entirely of my own devising which will allow the module to be placed in "maintenance mode" so that it can be upgraded in the future without disrupting any users), which will be rolled up into a hotfix probably on Friday. And then, barring any major new bugs cropping up, I will be done with the web-based piece and be freed up to get back to work on the staff tool portion. I am looking forward to that mostly because it will let me move back to the .NET 2.0 framework in Visual Studio 2005 instead of having to continue monkeying around in VS2003. The two are like night and day, and it's like being forced to drive a Yugo when you have a Porsche parked in the garage.
Life-wise things are generally good. We had the best kind of tropical storm this week, the kind that dumps a lot of rain (which was much needed due to a drought for the past several months) but which doesn't blow hard enough to cause any damage or inconvenience. Our lawn is very, very happy. We also got the fish tank up and running, which is cool. Kris has had the tank forever, but hasn't had it set up in over a decade. Out of our initial six fish, four died within the first two days. I gather that is not unusual and has to do with nitrites and nitrates, things that you can't establish artificially you just have to have live fish to create the proper levels. Replacement fish were added a few days ago, and they are all doing fine. We'll be able to add a few more in the next day or two, and gradually grow the tank to around 15-18 fish depending on size. One of my hermit crabs died this week, as did our dwarf hamster, so it's been a pretty rough week on the pet front.
In happier news, I signed the lease on my mom's new apartment this week. I think she is really going to like it. It's the perfect size for her, it has a nice planting area out front, and it is comfortably walking distance to historic downtown Winter Garden. It is only a three minute drive from the house, and her doctor is located right along that path, so it will be convenient for me as well. Kris and I will take care of moving her belongings out of storage and into her apartment next weekend, so when she arrives home on the 27th she will already have a functional apartment ready and waiting.
Ben seems to be napping his way through the summer break. He has been sleeping late plus taking one or two naps a day, but he's still going to sleep more or less on time. This past weekend we really didn't go out at all, and frankly I just wasn't inclined to push him anyway. Maybe this weekend we'll get out and do something. He did start training yesterday for the Special Olympics swim team, which he really seemed to enjoy. It was good to see him in the water with an actual coach, working with him to give him more focus. He will have swim practice every Tuesday night, and I am not sure when the first competition is.
In hobby news, we got a new table saw last week. I have plans to build a nice garden seat / planter bench, so that should keep me occupied for a while. I haven't done much on the home office since the first push when I painted and installed the new floor, but plans are starting to take shape for the rest of it. It will easily be a year or two before I have that project complete, but it will be a fun process. Kris is taking a trip to Seattle in a couple of weeks, so I might take advantage of that time period to disassemble her current computer desk and install the new built-in.
So that's it for now. Pretty much just typical life in suburbia.
