Effing Alarm

A little before 2am, some kind of alarm went off in the house.  Not continuously, no, that would be too easy to track and make sense of.  Instead, it's three or four piercing beeps.  Randomly.  The first time it went off, it woke me right up and I looked around the house to try to find it.  After ten minutes of nothing I laid back down, and within thirty seconds it went off again.  The sound was clearly coming from the wired alarm / smoke detector system.  I thought maybe the battery was failing on one of the smoke detectors, so I swapped out a few of them.  It went off again a little while later.  But it doesn't go off at regular intervals, not even remotely.  I laid awake in bed for nearly an hour with no alarm, and I finally got up to read for a little while.  Walking down the stairs it went off again at 4am.  Then thirty five minutes of quiet before it sounded, and then again seven minutes later.  The alarm system is not armed.  I checked all of the alarmed entry points anyway, and they are all good.  The only motion detector is in the living room, and 1) nothing is moving in there, and 2) when I *do* walk around in there it doesn't trigger the sound.

Kris says it did this one night while I was working out of town.  It just randomly went off several times during the night for no apparent reason.
