Well, I made it twenty miles into the marathon before the pace caught up with me. All in all I am satisfied, if not entirely happy. Given how much I slacked off over the winter, and given the fact that I had a back problem that was acting up for the past month, my prinary goal this morning was to finish the first lap and then get as far as I could into the second one.
I reached a point where I could feel my back starting to really twinge. By then I knew that I was not going to be able to finish based solely on the time remaining (they run a sweep up at the end of the pack that picks up anyone not keeping up with the minimum pacing), and with that knowledge my options were: 1) push myself until they *made* me stop, with a very strong possiblily that I would really put my back out and be laid out flat for a week, or 2) call it good at twenty miles, and take what I learned from the experience as training for the next time.
Realistically, I went twenty miles farther today in a marathon than I ever have in my entire life. That alone is something to be proud of. With the time change today, Kris and I can go back to biking/skating in the evenings (and even better, we are only a mile away from the trail instead of the 22 miles we used to have to drive). I know there are some other local events coming up, and I will try to make those happen. I will also get back into a weight training routine starting next week when I get back from my Seattle trip.
Next year, not only will I finish the Disney marathon but I will do it in under 2:20. You can take that to the bank.
