It was twelve years ago today that Benjamin was dragged kicking and screaming into the world, naked screaming and covered in blood. To say he was reluctant to be born would be an understatement. Although his mother's water broke on the afternoon of Christmas day, by the morning of the 27th it was obvious that he just wasn't going to be born the natural way. The doctors had to literally rip him out of his mother's womb, through an incision that I wasn't supposed to see but caught a reflection of in the glass cabinet doors of the operating room. He didn't sleep well that night. Or the night after. Or the night after that. In fact, it would be well over a year before he slept for more than three hours at a stretch. It was almost five years before he started using sign language for some basic communication. It was a few years after that before he finally spoke the words, "Daddy I love you." Through it all and despite it all, whatever challenges his autism has caused, he has never lacked love and affection. He may not speak many words, but communication has never been the issue. Happy birthday, Benjamin. You truly are a prince.
