Over the past few months Ben has really shown an increase in problems.  He is not sleeping well at all, and he is becoming increasingly aggressive.  His doctor today recommended that we try him on a prescription of Seroquel, which is an "atypical antipsychotic".  At first blush, the thought of putting Ben on an antipsychotic obviously makes me twitchy.

So is anyone out there familiar with this particular drug?  I am reading up on it, but I'd like to hear input from anyone with experience.

Here is my wife the RN:

While I have not seen any children on it, I have seen the results in many late teen and adults. It is generally a very good drug, with good results and very few side effects. The changes in mentation, additude, and their ability to enjoy life is striking in a fairly short amount of time.

FWIW, I also have an LPN friend with a bipolar schizophrenic son on Lithium and some other sedative/ anti-psychotics. Yes, it makes you twitch to put a child on such medication, and it should. This is not a step to take lightly, but you have obviously put research and thought into this. Her son is better able to enjoy life, interaction with others, and is an entirely different child. I hope it goes well with you and your boy.

My daughter was put on Seroquel for bi-polar disorder. It is used for many different things, all I can say is read up on it, talk to your doctor, take as directed, as with any of these types of medications you can not just stop taking them. Most of all watch how your son reacts. It may be that they have to get the dosage just right, which can take time or it is not the one for him. There are many good medications out there, unfortunately it is trail and error to fine the right combinations for a patient. Good Luck!
