Today was a day where I was grateful to be 3000 miles away from the office.  Going through that meat grinder in person had to have been just bloody awful.  About 80% of what went down, I knew was coming.  But there were still a few surprises, some pleasant and some very much not so.  I'm just glad it's over so we can move on with the business of putting the pieces back together.  That task alone is going to easily take the remainder of the year.

So now I can finally post publicly:  effective Monday I become the primary developer on the R&D team based out of Fort Worth, TX.

Top selling points:

  • This is the team that will set the coding standards for the rest of the department.

  • The team will evaluate all new technology, and make recommendations on build vs. buy decisions.

  • The team will also act as a kind of SWAT team, to handle quick turnaround solutions and to step in when other teams need help.

  • Where all the other teams exist to please their target customers (consumers, members, staff, etc.), this team exists to please itself.

  • Flight time from Orlando to Fort Worth is roughly two hours and only hops one time zone.

The downside:
I don't know if or when the company will send me to Seattle again on their dime.  I have grown accustomed to getting to go back home several times per year and having the opportunity to visit old friends.  If the company is not picking up the tab, I don't know how soon I will be returning.  Given Kris' family connections plus my own roots in the northwest, I am sure we will travel up there together at some point.  And of course, I could turn such a trip into a working trip in as much as I could easily work out of the Seattle office.  I just don't know if the company will pay for the ticket.

So the real summary is, I am very excited about my new position.  I just hate what it took to get there.

Being on site, even for those of us who were reasonably certain we were secure (after all, we've been lied to by management before) was bloody awful. Having everyone standing around with Ronnie coming to play the headsman one at a time was simply brutal. There were so many ways that it could have been handled better.
