Friday, July 22nd
Most of the day Friday was spent preparing for Riff's arrival and tidying up last minute details. Ostensibly I was working, but I had just completed a major chunk of code and didn't want to start something new just before leaving on vacation for a week. Also it was a demo day, so there wasn't a whole lot to do anyway. I got a fair bit of housework done in the spare time between checking emails and instant messages. A new mattress and box spring had been delivered the day before, and I got the bed mostly ready for Riff to use. (Just so he doesn't feel guilty thinking I bought them just for him, I really needed the new bed set for Benjamin, as he had completely outgrown his existing bed. It was just good timing that Riff was getting a comfy new mattress for his visit.) Also during my lunch break I took my mom shopping for any supplies she would need while we were gone (she has no way to go shopping on her own, so she needed to be stocked up for the week while we were out of town), and also picked up a bike that I rented for 24 hours so Riff could join us on the Van Fleet trail the next morning.
After much hustle and bustle, and after keeping an eye on the flight trackers to stay up to date with Riff's plane, the time came to go to the airport and meet him. Kris stayed home to take a shower and freshen up, having worked all day (that's *actually* worked instead of the fake work I did all day) and knowing it would probably be a late night. Riff's flight was reasonably on time, and once we collected his baggage it was time to head back home. Even though I had seen Riff fairly recently with my Seattle visit in June, it is still a real eye-opener to see him in person. I gotta tell ya, I've known the man for two decades now, and never have I seen such a transformation in a person. He truly is an inspiration, and not only does he look good... he just looks happy. Here's a guy who woke up one morning and said "no more", and then set about to change himself in a very pragmatic way. No quick and easy fixes, just hard work and lots of sweat. You've got to admire a man who can do that.
Anyway, he three of us rallied up and headed off to Downtown Disney to catch some dinner at The Earl of Sandwich, followed by a night out at Pleasure Island. A good time was had by all. We visited the comedy improv club, made a brief visit to the Explorer's Club, and then Riff got down to business at the dance clubs. The favorite of the evening was Mannequin's, which featured a giant revolving dance floor. It is the ultimate in people watching, whether you are standing at the bar rail watching the dance crowd rotate by or you are out on the dance floor watching the rest of the crowd go by. The lighting system was simply amazing, and impossible for me to describe. It was just an great space.
I think we finally rolled home somewhere around 1am, and we all fell into bed. We had a busy day planned for tomorrow, and needed to get our rest.
