Yesterday was a short(er) day of work for Kris, and so it happened that at around 6:15 we decided to go over to the Van Fleet trail for a ride/skate. When we got outside and started mounting the bike rack on the car, we could hear thunder booming just to the east of us. Looking at the skies, it seemed like a storm was going to bear down on us at any moment. I almost changed my mind then and there, but we talked about it and came to the conclusion that the worst case is we would go for a drive, and if it was raining when we got to the trail we would just come home.
As it turns out, the trail was perfect. It had cooled off substantially from earlier in the day and the humidity had dropped enough that it was unnoticeable. We wound up going a full ten miles, Kris on her bike and I on my skates. Having her ride along with me really seems to keep my pace up, and it also makes for a very pleasant way to spend the evening and have a nice, meandering conversation. Along the way we saw a dozen or more turtles, ranging from small hand-sized ones up to very large ones. Let me tell you, the whole myth of the slow turtle is a lie - these guys can really move. Aside from the turtles, we also saw some monster large grasshoppers, a good three inches long. Scary little buggers. While we were taking a break, Kris spotted the remains of a molted snake skin resting on the edge of the swamp. Overall it was just a great evening's outing.
With any luck, we will be returning to the trail very soon.
