The population of the Miles household has now increased by three. For quite a while now I have been fascinated by land hermit crabs, and have been reading up on them. A few weeks ago while we were at St. Augustine we actually gathered up a goodly portion of beach sand to bring home for the foundation of our crabitat, and yesterday I went out and got the rest of the supplies necessary to make a happy home for hermit crabs. They like warm and humid, they like deep sand to dig in, and they like lots of things to climb on. I wanted to have the crabitat fully set up before I actually brought home any of the little critters, knowing that they would be extremely stressed from the whole pet store / journey home experience. As of last night everything was ready, the temperature was correct, the humidity was perfect, and the fresh water and salt water dishes were good to go. This morning, on the way home from skating I picked up three new friends.
First up is Ichi. You can see his picture here. He is the largest of the bunch, and a real climber. He is currently napping by hanging on with his big claw and two legs at the top of coconut backing fabric in his home. I didn't even see him go up it, I just blinked and he was up there. He's going to be a tricky one.
Next is Ni, who you can see here. He is the middle one, and extremely social. He particularly likes to hang out with his buddy San.
Speaking of whom, you can take a gander at San here. He is the smallest of the three, and also very friendly.
I expected all of them to burrow into the sand as soon as I brought them home, and spend time de-stressing. Instead, they have all been roaming around their crabitat climbing on anyting they can, drinking water, and at least checking out the food. These are supposed to be primarily nocturnal, so I am genuinely surprised at how active they have been given that it is the middle of the day. I am clearly going to have to get them more things to climb on, maybe a piece of wire mesh or a larger piece of driftwood. At this moment all three are up at the top of the backdrop, for all the world looking like they are intently studying the map of the Animal Kingdom on the wall behind them.
Cute little buggers, ain't they?
