It must have been somewhere in the late 90's when I noticed that several of my friends were carrying around Handspring Visors. It seemed they couldn't live without them. Being a certified geek, I had to get one for myself; sure enough, I couldn't live without it. At some point a few years later I was given a Compaq iPaq, which I used for about a year until the screen went bad. I didn't really like the WinCE interface anyway, so I switched back to the Palm OS with a Sony Clie. Aside from the nice high-resolution color screen, I particularly liked the ergonomics of the Clie. It has been my emergency backup brain for going on three years now.
Several months ago it started having problems holding a charge. The problem got progressively worse, until it reached the point where a full charge would give it about three seconds of life. I replaced the battery last fall, and that seemed to solve the problem. As it turns out, it only solved it for about two months before the same thing started happening again. A little searching around the 'net yeilded me at least a half-dozen posts on message boards from people with the exact same problem and no solution. It has to be an issue with the electronics, something about how it reads the battery life. In short, my brain was dead.
I started looking at replacement options. My camera also died recently. Oh, it still takes pictures. I just cant see them on the screen to tell how they turned out. Or do anything else with the screen. So I started looking at the Treo smart phones as a possible way to replace my cell phone, camera, and PDA all with one device. Everything I have read about the Treo 650 leads me to believe I would love it to peices. Except for that pesky $450 price tag.
Then I remembered something... Kris also has a Sony Clie, which has been sitting in a box for as long as I have known she had it. It's not the same model I had, it's definitely a step down with the simple monochrome screen and standard batteries instead of rechargables, but it has the same ergonomics. And it is already paid for.
Yesterday Kris gave me her PDA, and I am extremely relieved to have my brain back. Yeah, it would be nice to have a spiffy new Treo. It would also be nice to be naked in a hot tub with Bridget Fonda.

In other news:
My mother reports that over the past few days she has been relatively pain-free. The combination of the new computer chair I picked up for her plus the cat/camel stretching excercises her chirpractor assigned to her seem to have made a huge impact. Tomorrow morning I am taking her back for another adjustment, and I am looking forward to seeing how she does.
Finally, I tried to take Ben to the Magic Kingdom yesterday. He refused to get out of the car. One would guess by his general demanor when we parked that I was about to push him through the chutes towards a set of rotating knives. It's been over a month now since he has set foot inside the Magic Kingdom. I'm not sure what is going on with that. It's a wee bit frustrating, in that the whole point of uprooting myself and transplanting myself on the other end of the country was to take him somewhere that had a huge positive effect on him. I wish I understood what was going on in his head.
