One thing I forgot to mention in last night's post: As we were driving into the apartment complex, Kris spotted a gator sunning on the bank of one of the retention ponds that flank our apartment entrance. At first glance I couldn't tell for sure if it was really a gator, or if it was just a trick of light and shadows. We pulled around and parked in the lot directly adjascent to the pond, and Kris pulled out her binoculars to take a closer look. (Trust me - it was on the far side of the pond, and I have no intention of getting physically close to any large reptillian predators.) Sure enough, it was about a six foot gator sunning itself right at the edge of the foliage next to the pond. Looking a little further, there appeared to be a second gator actually floating in the middle of the pond with it's eyes just above the water line. In the year and a half that I have lived here, it's the first time I have seen a wild gator outside of the Alligator Alley. As near as I can figure, they are being displaced here because of the land clearing and construction that has been happening in the lots right next to the complex. Where once there was a large bit of scrub and marsh land, now there are tractors and earth movers and no trees. I'll take a wander down to the pond at lunchtime to take another look to see if they are still around. It's really pretty dang cool, so long as there is a good hundred yards between me and the gator....
