Staring at the room full of boxes last night, I honestly wondered how I could possibly have the apartment liveable again before Ben arrived for the weekend tomorrow. The task just looked impossibly huge. Like most large projects, though, once I started attacking it methodically and turning it into a series of small tasks it got much less daunting.

Since I had a clear expanse of floor space in the bedroom, having removed my old bed but not yet assembled Kris' bed, I decided it would be a good idea to put together the four bookshelves first. I figured it would be easier to do with the floor space I had, and also once they were together it would give me a place to put things. It took a little over an hour to assemble all of them, placing three along the wall in the bedroom and leaving one to go out in the living room. Then I put the bed together, which actually only took about five minutes. The side rails just slotted into the headboard and footboard, no hardware required, and then there were three slats to set in place and it was ready for box spring and mattress. A few minutes after that I was blissfully asleep.

This morning I got up, and had to actually get some work done (the pays-the-rent kind of work, as opposed to moving boxes around). During my lunch break I put in an hour of doing an initial sort of the boxes - kitchen stuff to the kitchen, bedroom stuff to the bedroom, etc. At the end of the hour the living room was 2/3 cleared, the couch was where it belonged, and I was feeling much better about things.

After work I took a couple hours to go play with Ben at the Magic Kingdom, and then once I got home I finished the initial sort. The bookshelf went into place, and was filled with both of our DVD collections combined. There is enough room left on each shelf for at least a little bit of expansion, and there is room at the top for one or two glass shelves which are still safely wrapped and set aside. After the chaos of yesterday, now our living room looks like this:

Yeah, I still have more work to do on it before Kris arrives (most of the actual unpacking will be left until after she gets here), but at least the place should feel like home when she first walks in the door. Only six more days to go.
