Today one of the greatest touchstones of my youth came out on DVD. Before there was Star Wars, before there was Star Blazers, there was Land of the Lost. In fact, I have such fond memories of this show that I was a little bit scared to watch it again thirty years later, afraid that it would not live up to the memory.

I needn't have worried.

I've watched the first episode twice now; first on its own, and then with the commentary by Sid and Marty Krofft. Now I'm about to go watch the same episode again with the commentary by David Gerrold. The thing that amazes me most about the show is the quality of writing. They may have been working on a shoestring budget, but nobody involved with the show had any desire to just knock off a dumb kids show. There are some amazingly complex storylines going on here, and the overall tone is much heavier than your standard saturday morning fare. It's good to know that even after three decades, the show still holds up well.

Pardon me, I've got to get back to watching my kiddy shows.
