I'll be honest right up front; I almost didn't bother going to this movie because I hated the last one so much, but in the end my curiosity outweighed my trepidation and I paid my money to see the big finale. To say I was going in with diminished expectations would be an understatement. Let's face it, The Matrix Reloaded essentially consisted of Larry and Andy Wachowski masturbating on screen for two and a half hours. It's a wonder that theaters didn't require viewers in the first twelve rows to wear ponchos like a Gallagher concert, because they were in serious danger at all times of being drowned in Wachowski spluge. I pretty much expected more of the same from Revolutions.
I am pleasantly surprised to say I was wrong.
Revolutions focuses on everything that Reloaded was completely lacking in. It is all about human relationships, sacrifice, faith, and persistance in the face of utter hopelessness. Everything that happened was in service to the story, instead of being a gee-whiz effect done just because they could. There are only two big action set pieces, and both are essential. Where the battle with the multiplying Agent Smiths in Reloaded drug on and on with no purpose, just Smith and Neo pummeling each other until Neo got bored and flew away, their final battle in Revolutions actually had meaning and consequence.
In short, I liked the movie. Not as much as the first one, but certainly far more than the second one. Yeah, there's some hackneyed melodramatic dialogue. Yeah, the ending is a little trite. But at least in the end it returned to the same biblical mythology and symbology that made the first movie resonate. And thank god they aren't making another one.
