Yesterday was Ben's last day of school, the last day of four amazing years spent in that classroom. Every year there is a picnic after school for the teachers and families from the classroom, and needless to say this year was a little weepy. Ben, of course, was completely oblivious. He had a great time playing on the swings and on the play structure, not grasping at all the notion that he will never go back to that classroom. The work that his teachers did with him over the past four years is absolutely amazing, and I'd like you to meet them.
Lisa

Lisa has taught at Alternative Elementary 2 (AE2) for five years now, her entire teaching career. Her first year in the classroom, Ben was right next door in the kindergarten class and he won her heart during his many mad dashes into her room to grab little plastic colored teddy bears from one of her toy bins. By the time he graduated into her classroom she knew him well. I can honestly say that we could not have asked for a better teacher for Ben. Lisa's patience and skill, her relentless tracking and data collection, and her obvious love of her job and the kids she teaches all combine to make her truly one of the finest teachers I have ever had the pleasure to know. Over the past several months, in preparation for our move to Florida, she has gone above and beyond the call of duty by not only compiling all of her data to pass on to the new school district, but also in videotaping Ben in the classroom so that his new teachers will have a clearer understanding of what he is capable of in the classroom, what he is familiar with, and what he has been working towards. I can't even begin to describe how sad I am to see Ben leave her classroom. It would have happened at the start of the next school year anyway, but it is still going to be hard to get used to not having Lisa as his teacher.
Katy

Katy is the first teaching assistant in Lisa's class, and has also been wonderful to work with. She will be one of the teachers in Ben's ESY (that's Extended School Year) class this summer, so she will actually be teaching Ben for another four weeks or so. The ESY program always happens at a different school, and it is only four hours a day and four days a week, but it's nice to know that she will be there for a few more weeks yet.
Mark

Mark is the other teaching assistant in Lisa's class, and has been spectacular in working with Ben. I have had the pleasure of spending a fair amount of time with him at any number of field trips, and he is a heck of a great guy.
Between the three of them, it has been a great relief to know that Ben was in excellent hands while in their care. We have invited all three of them to come down for a visit, and I really hope they will take us up on the offer.
