Well, this has been an interesting afternoon...

Sara is moving this weekend, out of student family housing and into a new apartment in Shoreline. My lease expires next month, and I have been intending to move as well. The main reasons for moving are to:

1) be closer to work and cut down both my commuting time and mileage on my car (I have had this car for less than two years and I just hit 42,000 miles on it).

2) be closer to where Sara and Ben live, so that when I need to watch him in the morning before work I don't have to get up so damn early.

You see, with Sara being a teacher she pretty much has to leave for work an hour before Ben's bus shows up to take him to school. Being autistic, there just aren't many people we trust to watch him so I am pretty much elected. Right now that means getting up at 5:30 in the morning so that I can go sit in freeway traffic for 45 minutes to get to Sara's place. If I move closer in I can get an extra hour of sleep in the morning. I'm willing to pay more in rent just for that extra hour.

So anyway, I decided to go out and look at apartments this afternoon and figured I should start where Sara just moved and work my way out from there. The complex she moved into is huge, and in fact she is in a building across the street from the main complex. She had mentioned to me that if I moved in there she would get a kickback, and the complex is so big that I could easily get an apartment on the other end of the property and we would probably bump into each other very rarely.

<<side note>>
Sara and I have a very odd relationship. She is my ex-wife, but we get along very well. That is largely due to the fact that Ben is a pretty complex kid to take care of so I wind up seeing her a minimum of twice per week, and talk to her on the phone probably a half dozen times per week. Despite how well we work together with Ben, and despite the fact that a part of me is still very attracted to her, there is absolutely zero chance that we will ever get back together.

So I got to the apartment complex about 4:00. I knew she was in the process of moving but I figured she would be busy across the street so the odds of us bumping into her would be pretty slim. So of course just as I went to open the door to the apartment leasing office, she came walking out. She had finished unloading the trucks, and went to the office to check on some kind of mainainance issue. Ben was very excited to see her. She was very surprised to see him. I wanted to crawl under a rock, because I figured this made me look like some kind of creepy stalker ex. As it turns out, she wasn't bothered at all and in fact had us come over and look at her new apartment. The move went far better than she had expected, and she was already well into the process of unpacking.

Ben loves the new apartment. There is an entire wall of windows that look out onto a side street with nice trees and things, plus a balcony to go stand on. Ben's new bedroom is huge, and once Sara gets it unpacked and set up he will be in heaven.

We stayed for about a half hour, and then left so that Sara could get on with the unpacking. I checked into getting an apartment there myself, but they don't take pets which is a deal breaker. If I even *thought* about giving up Spike, I am sure she would crawl into my bed late one night and gouge out my eyeballs or some such thing. She's a bit possessive.

I looked at other apartments along the same street but none of them really impressed me, until I got down to Roosevelt off of Northgate Way. I found a really great place (at least it looks great from the outside), with a very family oriented atmosphere, a nice green belt along the back where all the balconies face, and a nice outdoor pool. According to their brochures they also take cats. Unfortunately the leasing office had closed by the time I got there, so I'll have to go back tomorrow to take a look at one of the units. I timed driving from there to where Sara's new apartment is, and it was less than two miles and under five minutes to get there. It is far enough away that we wouldn't be bumping into each other, and close enough to be convenient. I am really hoping I like it as much from the inside.
