My iPaq PDA died yesterday. Well, not really died. It's just that the screen taps have gotten completely erratic, making it impossible to use. I have run the alignment process numerous times to no avail, and finally called Compaq for support. In a nutshell I was told that it was out of warranty, that it was definitely a hardware problem, and that I could send it to them for servicing and it would probably need a new LCD screen costing well over $200.
This for a PDA that was given to me less than a year ago.
I pondered the situation, and realized something -- although I really liked the color display, particularly for reading e-books on, I just didn't like the Pocket PC operating system. The Palm OS is far superior, and is easier to find applications for. Case in point, I spent days looking for an application to track my paperback books and never found one that I liked for the Pocket PC. In ten minutes of searching yesterday I found 3 different applications for the Palm OS that did what I wanted.
So I have gone back to my Handspring Visor. I miss the color. I'll probably upgrade to one of their newer models with a color screen sometime next year, but for now I am happy to be back. The iPaq had some great bells and whistles, I just never used them. Frankly, I don't think I will ever go back to the Pocket PC platform again.
