I've know about this for almost two months now, but it hasn't been official until today so I was waiting to say anything.

Retroactive to the first of July, I have a new job title: Manager - Global Technology Software Development Continuity

Is that an impressive title or what? Basically, I am responsible for overseeing on a technical level all development in the company both with internal resources and external contractors. My role is part mentor, part traffic cop, and in many cases part diplomat/facilitator/translator. Since July I have spent a week in Seattle, a week in Oakland, a week in Vegas, several more days in Seattle, I am headed to Charlotte for two days later this month, and it appears I will be spending a few days in Fort Worth in mid-October. I would be shocked if I don't return to Seattle at least one more time before the end of the year.

I am absolutely thrilled about this new position. It is one that I effectively spun out of whole cloth to create for myself, sold to the executives, and within a few short weeks have become respected at a whole new level within the company. I have always felt secure and valued in my job as a developer, but it is truly exciting to move to an entirely new level and gain the respect of the leadership team as well. Of course, I am also a little bit terrified that I will fail horribly given that I am by nature a hermit and this is a job that requires continual communication to and with a large number of people. So hey, if anyone has any recommendations for good leadership books to read I am all ears. Just don't recommend "Who Moved My Cheese?" or I will be forced to kill you.
