First off -- a new picture gallery here filled with lots of Benjamin present opening goodness.

So I pretty much spent all Christmas day at my ex-wife's place. Honestly, I would have much preferred to spend the day with my future wife but that wasn't really an option. Overall it was a good day, though. Ben was the polar opposite of most kids on Christmas morning; he slept and slept until we finally had to drag him out of bed well after 10am. He was a bit stunned to come out into the living room to find the Christmas tree overflowing with presents.

He spent a while going through his stocking, and then needed to take a break for a little while. Soon enough he was back out and ready to open presents. And boy did he open presents. He was ripping open packages left and right, delighted with the whole thing. He had a big dopey smile on his face pretty much all day.

Sara was nice enough to make a Christmas dinner and share it with me, and while she was doing that I set up her new dvd and surround sound system that she picked up on sale as a present to herself. We ate lasagna, we played with the mancub, we watched Pirates of the Carribbean. Overall not a bad day in the grand scheme of things.

At one point Ben dug out Sara's annual pass for Sea World and asked to go see Shamu, so tomorrow we will go do that. It was such a direct and specific request that we can't really say no...

The only awkward moment of the day came courtesy of Sara's older sister. She sent Sara a box of presents, some for Ben and some for Sara. Ben had run out of his own presents to open and started tearing into Sara's, which she was fine with. Until.

Among the gifts that Sara's sister sent were three video tapes. These tapes were exactly the kind of tapes that A) you wouldn't want your ten-year-old to be looking at, and B) you wouldn't want your ex-spouse to see you opening. Poor Sara was stuck between being pissed off at her sister for sending them without giving her any kind of warning, and being mortified that I saw them. For my part, I elected to just graciously pretend that I didn't see a thing. I suspect that Sara is on the phone with her sister right now, explaining to her why these particular gifts were not a good idea. (Or more likely, they were a great idea to be opened some other time).

I talked to Kris for a little while this morning. Not long enough. And being at Sara's place, I really couldn't talk much anyway. I miss her like crazy on any day, but today was especially hard. She seemed to really like the present I got her, and I was just floored that she actually got me the Complete Far Side. It is an amazing two volume hardcover collection of every single Far Side comic ever published, including over 1000 that have never been published before in book form. Yay!

So now I am sitting here back at home, too early really to go to bed, so I think I'll go read a few comics. Or maybe about fifteen years' worth of them. It won't make me miss Kris any less, but at least it will give me a few good smiles.
