This was the day for Sara's belongings to be loaded on the truck. The plan was to start loading at 9am as soon as Ben left for school and to be finished by the time he got back at 1pm. Naturally it all went disasterously wrong.
I shouldn't even have had to be there (I don't recall seeing Sara show up at my place to help load the truck), but I have really been trying to be friendly and helpful through this whole experience. Too helpful for my own good, I should think.
Most of Sara's friends were off on vacation to assorted far off and exotic places. Only one showed up to help, although thankfully Bruce is 6'6" and strong as an ox. The entire loading crew consisted of Bruce, Sara, her mom, and me. As 1pm drew near it was leapingly obvious that the loading was still hours away from being done. Sara took Ben with her to run some errands while Bruce and I continued bringing boxes to the truck and Sara's mom worked at actually packing them in as tightly as possible. Unfortunately, she had an appointment to get allergy shots that afternoon that she absolutely had to go to. That left just Bruce and me, slogging away at getting everything too the truck.
As 6pm approached, I had to leave as well. By that point everything was either physically on the truck or else on the sidewalk beside it. Sara's sister was due to arrive shortly, and Sara and her mom were also on their way back. Poor Ben was miserable, completely unable to comprehend what was going on. As for me, I was in a completely foul mood.
I was also supposed to be meeting people at Romio's for a goodbye gathering. I was expecting a few people to show up, but I was amazed and flattered by the turnout. The Pat Pack was very well represented -- Kris (of curse), Sea Monkey, Tootsie Plunkette, Skippy the Wonder Squid, Isaac's Grandma, Mike in West Seattle, Six, Miss Dudley, Miss Dudley Jr. Jr., and Spanky Bear were all there, and Pat himself sent along a note to me. Matt and Jen showed up with both of their darling little girls. All of Threepenny arrived, which gave me the special delight of introducing Six to Six. Both were stunned to discover someone else who went by that name.
It was a splendid evening, three hours that I will treasure in my memory forever.
Following the dinner I had to go back to Sara's place to check up on the truck. They were just finishing, and Bruce helped me to erect the bulkhead.
I returned to Riff's house, my foul mood fully revived. I was beyond exhausted after the past few days, and I had to say goodbye to Kris. It should have been special. I should have had flowers or a card. Unfortunately my brain was completely fried by that point. Kris, god bless her, not only understood but held me and helped me to relax at least just a bit. I am going to miss her something fierce these next few months until I see her again at the end of September.
She left, and I collapsed.
