7:58am - Wake up sweating from nightmare that Ben has driven off in the car by himself.
9:18am - Arrive at work to discover a dust-up over a particular page that was improperly pushed to the live site last night. Resolved the problem within 15 minutes.
12:31pm - Walk to deli to get a quick lunch before the weekly dev team meeting.
12:43pm - Phone call from Sara, did I remember that today is early dismissal? No, I didn't. School is out in less than 30 minutes.
12:55pm - There is an accident on northbound I-5 just north of the West Seattle bridge, blocking one lane. Traffic is crawling, there is no way I will make it to the school on time.
1:05pm - Speaking to Transportation on the phone; the driver expects that I am picking up Ben directly from school, please have Ben take the bus home instead and I will meet him there.
1:45pm - Waiting for bus to arrive.
2:00pm - Still waiting for bus to arrive, stressing because a) I'm afraid Ben is still at the school, and b) I'm supposed to be home by now to meet a repairman from the broadband company to fix my flaky internet connection
2:10pm - On the phone to Transportation, where is my son? He is on the bus, and it should be there in about two minutes.
2:15pm - Bus arrives, Ben is very confused that he took the bus home and I am there to get him off the bus. Even more confused when we drive back to my place, less than two blocks from his school.
2:31pm - Phone call from Comcast, did I remember that I had a 2pm service appointment? Yes, I'm very sorry, I am just pulling up now and I see the truck.
2:35pm - Two repairmen checking my signal strength, Ben is bouncing off the walls. Ben keeps putting a blank tape in the VCR and then getting upset that there is nothing on the blank tape. I have no idea what he expects to be on it, but he is getting increasingly agitated. Repairmen are asking me questions and running diagnostics.
3:03pm - The culprit is a flaky splitter inside the wall. Repairmen remove it and rewire, my signal strength improves by 18db. Ghosting problem on channels 4 and 7 also dramatically reduced. Ben is moving chairs to climb up to high shelves where I hid blank tapes. Getting instant messages and emails from work about hotfix issues.
3:24pm - phone call from work to discuss home page news publishing issues. Over the course of a 30 minute conversation I am finally able to identify what the *real* business need is, and brainstorm a solution that can be done with a minimum of new dev work. Julie and Barry think I am a genius. Ben is throwing blank tapes across the room, frustrated that the blank tapes are blank.
4:30pm - Six new urgent bugs, must be resolved ASAP so that a hotfix can push out tomorrow. Ben is climbing the walls. I have my cell phone in my pocket with the hands-free ear bug in my ear, and then my full-sized headphones on, bouncing between listening to music to drown out Ben's chaos and talking on the phone to co-workers or ex-wives.
4:45pm - First bug was easy to fix. Second bug is already driving me batty.
5:15pm - Finally figure out second bug. Ben has calmed down some, and is watching Fantasia 2000. He particularly likes Rhapsody in Blue. He has excellent taste.
6:02pm - Last four bugs resolved and checked in. Ben is asking to take a bath. Sure, no problem.
6:35pm - Ben is happlily soaking in hot soapy water. Sara arrives to pick him up.
Somewhere during the day I also reset three different user's passwords for the Pat Pack message board, troubleshot problems some users were having reading the board from behind a firewall, helped another user delete an extra unwanted login, and tweaked two site templates.
