I got a phone call from my mom a little while ago. She has not been feeling well for the past week. Ok, she has not been feeling well for the past two years, but she has not been feeling well in a different way for the past week. So anyway, apparently this morning there was a significant amount of blood in her stool. For someone with a blood disorder and taking blood thinning agents, this is a very scary thing.
She called her doctor, who had her come in right away. Blood tests, exams, the usual drill. The good news is that her INR level is fine, and she has apparently not lost a significant amount of blood and therefore is apparently not bleeding internally anywhere. The bad news is the exam did not find any cause for the bleeding. The most common causes for blood in that area are the kinds of thing that should be immediately obvious in an exam. This means that they need to do a colonoscopy to find out what is going on. In order to do that, they need to change her medication in order to drop her INR level down low enough so that she does not risk a bleed during the procedure.
They scheduled for her to come to the hospital on Monday for this, although if she bleeds again between now and then she will need to go to the hospital immediately. This could be absolutely nothing, or it could be something very very scary. At this point we don't know, and there is really nothing anybody can do except wait.
