To spare any stress or concern, I'll skip right off to the ending and then start over.
My mom is fine. (Well, as fine as can be expected anyway, but not in nearly the danger that I thought she was this morning.)
I got up this morning and went to work as usual. I figured I would spend the day fixing bugs, then go pick up Ben after work and have a dad kind of evening. Then at about 10:15 my phone rang. It was my mom calling to see if I could come pick her up and take her to urgent care, because she didn't want to call 911. Her voice was shaky, with a bit of a stutter that I have only heard once before on a day in which I wound up racing an ambulance to her house. Apparently she had a blood draw yesterday as usual, and her PT level was all the way up to 6.8 -- the highest it has ever gone. When the PT level goes up, the clotting factor in the blood goes way down and she becomes at serious risk for having a bleed in her brain. This morning she had a terrible headache. Not a migraine, and not the usual headaches she gets, but something different. When she told me this my stomach dropped and I immediately had visions of her having a bleed and just dropping dead on the spot. I walked out of work and got to her house as quickly as possible within the bounds of safety.
When I got there she looked better than I expected, and was more lucid than I expected. I took that as a very good sign. I got her up to the Urgent Care unit at Group Health and after about 90 minutes of waiting and talking to nurses they got her down to radiology for a CAT scan. The radiologist was able to conclusively rule out there being an bleeds happening, but did notice what appeared to be an infection in her sinus cavities. Not the facial ones that you normally see get infected, but the deep cavities up under the brain.
After four hours in the hospital we arrived at the conclusion that she was in no pressing danger, got an antibiotic prescription, and I took her home to rest. John is there now, and everything appears to be fine.
I did eventually go pick up Ben, and I am having a dad kinda evening, so at least the day is winding up pretty much how I planned. I just could have gone without that stressful middle part.
I am sure my mom agrees.
