First off, the important part: As of 10pm Ben is finally asleep. It was unbelievable how much he foughtit. He lay there with one eye closed and the other eye half open, rolling his head back and forth and reaching out with his hands to click a non-existant remote control. Everytime he was just about out he would suddenly lurch forward and mumble something. He was obviously already dreaming, his body just hadn't quite caught up. I am currently sitting on the floor in front of the door to the hospital room in order to prevent any well-meaning nurse from entering the room. He is *going* to get a good night's sleep, dammit.

Earlier in the day we got the results back from the regular blood tests, and the two pancreas enzyme levels have started to come down. They started out at almost 300 and now they are both below 200. The goal is to be below 50. The liver enzymes have dropped all the way to normal levels. We won't have the results back on any of the blood clotting tests until tomorrow (getting the PT level is easy, but the hematologist requested a bunch of other screening tests that take some extra time).

Even better, Ben had a little bit of a bowel movement today. Apparently the CT scan showed that he was blocked up. The doctor tells me that when the pancreas gets inflamed then the intestines tend to shut down. The fact that things there are starting to move again is a very good sign.

Ben spent most of the day asking for every kind of food he could think of, but he's really not ready for it yet. We'll see where the numbers are tomorrow and possibly try some juice tomorrow afternoon and see if he can keep it down.

The other good thing that happened today was that Dr. Keeley got brought into the loop. He is the autism specialist that Ben sees, and his office is walking distance from the hospital. He came over this evening to check Ben out and review all of the notes in his file. When we told him how Ben failed to respond to the sedatives the past few days (I forget the name of the drug right now), his response was, "Don't take him to a bar. He won't be a cheap drunk." Thanks mom and dad, I am sure he gets it from you. ;)

Anyway, he has some good suggestions for how to deal with things moving forward, and for the first time since this whole think started I feel like there might be a light at the end of the tunnel.

Thank Goodness

I am so glad to hear about some positive progress! We are thinking about Ben and you guys! I hope he gets a good night's sleep - and that you do as well.
