I thought about taking yesterday off from work, but there was a dot one release happening and I wanted to be there to be sure my stuff passed QA. As soon as the build was complete and QA gave me the thumbs up I skated out of work and headed back to the old place.

Trip 1: Stopped by the new place first to pet the cat and get a few empty boxes, then off to the old place. Emptied out the laundry room and the bedroom, and cleaned both. The vacuum cleaner didn't seem to be picking anything up, and when it got close to a wall it actually kicked up dust. Not a good sign, so I disassembled the brush compartment and cleared the blockage. Of course, that involved removing two deeply set screws in a recess that was too narrow for my screwdriver to fit in. Grr. Took me almost a half hour to find a different screwdriver that fit. Finished vacuuming the back area of the apartment, scrubbed the walls, and mopped the laundry room. The car was full, so I headed out for the next lap.

Trip #2 - on the way out, stopped by Fred Meyer to return the drip pans I had bought for the stove (the old ones were thrashed). I had bought the wrong kind, and they didn't have the ones I needed. Got my cash back, bought some fresh fruit and some cold juice, and headed back to the new place. Unloaded. Headed back towards the old place. Stopped into Target and picked up the right drip pans for the stove. Also got some burner covers for the new place. Got to the old place and continued loading things. Cleaned the living room, bathroom, and kitchen. Somewhere in there I got a call from maintenance from my new apartment -- I had called early in the day to let them know that my refrigerator did not appear to be refrigerating. The light came on, but the freezer was not cold and the main compartment was tepid. The maintenance guy told me that the reason it didn't seem cold was because I didn't have anything in it (?!?!?). He put some ice cube trays in the freezer and told me that once I put food in there everything would be ok. Right. Anyway, I finally finished loading the last of my stuff and finished the cleaning... and didn't have any space left to stow my cleaning supplies, vacuum, etc. and wound up having to make one last trip.

Trip # 3 - unloaded the car at the new place, put all my food away, and headed back to the old place one last time. loaded up the very last of my stuff and dropped my keys and a forwarding address in the night deposit at the apartment office.

I was finally home and ready for bed a little after midnight. Phew.

Got up this morning, and things that were frozen the night before were not frozen anymore. I was not entirely shocked. Fortunately I had no real perishables to worry about.

I had also noticed the night before as I was unloading that I had read the wrong power meter the day I moved in. It seemed odd at the time that they asked me to read my own meter and bring back the paperwork, but I had done it but looked at the wrong meter.

This morning (after the cable / Internet installer came and got me set up with AT&T) I stopped in the apartment office on my way to work. There was a different woman working the office, and I told her about the refrigerator. She was visibly stunned when I told her the maintenace guy yesterday had said the reason it wasn't cold was because there wasn't anything in it. She said she would have it taken care of today. Then I told her about the power meter. Stunned doesn't even *begin* to describe her response at finding out that I had read my own meter. She said that in eleven years of leasing apartments, she had never even *heard* of having a new tenant read thier own meter. Sounds like someone was a bit lazy the day I moved in and just didn't want to walk all the way across the complex to do it properly. Oops.

So that pretty much wraps up the "moving" part of my move. My house looks like a warehouse right now, so today I get to begin the process of actually putting things away and hooking up all of my electronics. I pretty much have until Friday evening to get the apartment into some semblance of order before I get Ben for the weekend....
